MELOR by MELINDA OMAR
The fashion brand Melor by Melinda Omar is renowned for bringing the
traditional Iban handwoven “Pua Kumbu’ ikat textiles of Sarawak, Malaysian
Borneo to the fashion runway of the London Fashion Week this year. ‘Pua
Kumbu’ is traditionally woven in cotton on the back strap back tension floor
loom by Iban women in the longhouse communities. Silk yarn, bamboo fibre
and more recently the Tencel fibre have been innovatively used to produce a
softer and luxurious textile that is suitable for fashion.
MELOR focuses on femininity and elegance, playing with different silhouettes
to complement the natural dyes used in the exquisite Pua Kumbu ikat textile.
For the Sarawak Eco Fashion Gala show sponsored by the Sarawak Ministry of
Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Melor has teamed up with the
master weavers of Kampung Semera Ulu, Asajaya District led by Ibu Ngot and
Ibu Majenah who are experts in plaiting the ‘tikar begerang’ lattice pandanus
mats.
The ‘Tikar Begerang’ pandanus mats are incorporated as wearable fibre art
capes and skirts. Specially designed pandanus pieces are also made into
necklaces and as clutch bags. MELOR has always participated in Kokand
International Festival, Uzbekistan, and the World Ikat Textiles International
Fashion shows in Jakarta, Indonesia and Khon Kaen, Thailand.
The mission of MELOR is to promote the arts and crafts of Sarawak’s artisan
communities through Fashion internationally, and to sustain the cultural
heritage of the people.
