International Digital Fashion Week Interview
Celebrating Diversity and Sustainability:
A Q&A with TSX Design House
A Q&A with TSX Design House
International Digital Fashion Week showcases a diverse array of unique designers. One such designer is TSX Design House founded by Ebony Adell. TSX Design House has many values; including sustainability, social justice, and inclusivity. So, we sat down with Ebony Adell to learn more about her journey with her brand and her latest works.
Q: Tell us more about your brand; what’s the story behind the brand?
A: I come from a very creative and successful family grounded in entrepreneurism. My dad is a veteran, self-taught artist who can create in all genres; painting, drawing, carpentry, sculpture, music, dance, and more. My mom is a self-taught artist, interior designer, and writer; and was the first black female Assistant Director of the DPW of Milwaukee County. The list goes on.
My sustainable luxury brand TSX Design House was established in 2002. I had been working online as a chat host teaching tantra and yoga. One of my clients was struggling and asked me to create a visualization of what a chakra is. A visual mantra. This was my first official painting of perfectly balanced chakras. That picture not only put it into a form they could see and touch, but it also put them into perspective for me. From that I decided to make t-shirts for clients that depicted their strongest chakras, then I took it all the way.
I took all my money and went to college at Mount Mary University. Throughout college I started to build my business and technical knowledge base; sustainability became the niche and cohesive value that tied it all together.
Promoting wellness and a sustainable consciousness is my mission and purpose. It’s my role as a new age revolutionary to combat socio-environmental oppression.
Q: How would you describe your customer?
A: My customers exist in all income brackets, cultures, age groups, geographical locations and speak different languages. They are on the same vibrational frequencies as the brand. They know when they see a pattern, colorway etc. that resonates and activates their chakras. They either have already begun making small lifestyle changes to be more sustainable or are exploring some form of more ecofriendly living.
Q: Tell us about your new collection, What inspired this collection?
A: This collection is inspired by the 18th chakra in the 6th dimension. This is where we find the Calabi yau manifold. According to Superstring theory, the universe consists of 10 dimensions, including our 3-dimensional physical universe, time as the 4th dimension, and 6 unobserved dimensions compactified – or curled up – in elaborate, twisted shapes called Calabi-Yau manifolds.
Once you transcend the 18th chakra this new level of consciousness is not tethered to any previous chakra or dimension. The message is that It’s ok to close those doors and begin a brand new awakening. In your real life it’s ok to cut ties not just with people but also with old ideas and expectations.
Q: What is your design process like? How do you approach design?
A: I don’t follow trend reports or design by season. Each collection has to meet a certain criterion.
Number 1 is that it has to align with the chakra or chakras I choose to bring into the physical reality. I determine what dimension it exists in, and how the clothes will represent the evolution of the brand as we move up on the tantric hierarchy.
Number 2 The chakra and dimension have their own message and we communicate that through the colors that represent it and how it presents in the physical world. Does the fabric move, what type of body and form are we creating? The fabric also has to be sustainable or repurposed.
Number 3 I align the chakra, color, fabric, and imagery with whatever message or social protest we’re highlighting. This season we chose a tribute to Ruby Bridges on this season’s outerwear to protest against the erasure of black history and book bans. We brought back the Freedom Quilt Map print to also protest the erasure of black history.
