International Digital Fashion Week Interview
A Sustainable Heritage: MTTC Australia
MTTC Australia is known for creating timeless, sustainable luxury womenswear pieces. Focusing on versatile designs, adjustable pieces, multifunctional elements, and reducing textile waste, MTTC provides women with the most stylish sustainable garments. To learn more, we sat down with the brand for an interview to discuss their brand and latest innovations.
Q: What is the story behind your brand?
A: We are MTTC (Mariya Tamila Tkachenko Couture), a mother-daughter duo designer brand aiming to bring sustainability to luxury couture garments. MTTC was founded from our joint passion and need for beautiful, luxurious, and sustainable fashion. We combined our skills to create a label unlike any other; one with a focus on ethical fabric sourcing and manufacturing and on superior craftsmanship. In our design and creative process, we incorporate vintage materials and utilize skills passed down to us from women before us, stemming from our roots in Ukraine where having a skill was important and nothing was wasted. We keep production local with every piece being designed and handmade in Sydney, and we keep it small to avoid mass production. Our combined design styles create pieces that are a blend of bold and classic, pieces that are unique but remain timeless, in the signature MTTC style.
Q: How would you describe your customer?
A: Our customer is not someone that wants to blend in or mindlessly follows trends. Our customers love to express themselves through fashion, stand out, and make a statement. In saying this, people that purchase MTTC are looking for an investment for their wardrobe. They are mindful about the impact that the fashion industry has on our planet, but they don’t want to sacrifice comfort, luxury, quality, or style. Our designs give our customers the flexibility to style and re-wear their pieces for years to come, and so they choose sustainability, they choose MTTC.
Q: What is the inspiration behind your collection this season?
A: We are proud to launch our new SS24 collection ‘Magique’ with IDFW in its latest season. The new season brings with it a warm glow of positivity, an air of joy and a delightful hint of magic! Classic silhouettes blend with bold patterns and glimmering fabrics to create a collection with the signature MTTC style. There are transformations with removable sleeves, detachable bows, and reversible garments, allowing for pieces to be restyled and worn for years to come. Unique and vintage materials make their statement with an emphasis on sustainability in fashion. There’s something for every stylish woman’s wardrobe in ‘Magique’.
Q: Your brand is known for creating one-of-a-kind, sustainable pieces. What does sustainability mean to you as a business? How do you approach sustainability?
A: Sustainability is very important to us, and we factor it in with every season’s collection. As mentioned previously, we are known for using vintage fabrics in our work. Not only does this create designs that are unlike those by other designers, but it also means that we are minimizing the need for more textile production— which makes up a huge part of the world’s waste. Also, in the design and creation process, we try to minimize waste by using as much of the chosen fabric as possible. We rarely have many offcuts and if we do, we save any large pieces for other creations such as matching millinery or future projects. We also do not mass produce any of our designs, although you may see two similar MTTC pieces, they will never be exactly the same. This also means we are able to keep our designs exclusive and our customer is reassured that they have an original, one-of-a-kind design.
Q: Your video on IDFW is absolutely stunning. Can you tell us about the story behind your video?
A: We love to shoot our collection videos out and about in Sydney. Not only is our city beautiful, but we love to show how our designs look outside amongst the people. We also love to see people’s reactions to our designs. As you can see in our video, if you wear MTTC you will definitely stand out from the crowd!
Q: The pieces featured in your video are very versatile– many of them feature detachable elements or are matching sets. What is your process for designing such versatile garments? How do you incorporate versatility so seamlessly into your designs?
A: Apart from creating designs that are unique, we also create for comfort and practicality. Every element of our designs has a purpose, whether it be for a statement or function. We want our customers to be able to wear our outfits for more than one occasion. So, we often create outfits that can go from day to evening, for example, or that can be styled up or down depending on the wearer’s needs and mood. Versatility also goes hand in hand with sustainability; we believe the more versatile an outfit is, the longer you are likely to keep it and re-wear it. We create for people who are conscious of the impact the fashion industry has on our planet, but they still want to look fabulous whilst making a difference!
