A Truly Eco-Fashion by Edric Ong
The Edric Ong Tempest Collection for Spring Summer 2025 Collection can best
be described as a truly Eco-Fashion! The entire collection which premiered at
Fashion London of London Fashion Week on 14 th September features his personally
hand painted silks and cottons using his own discovered wild figs fermentation
natural dyes. He first discovered this tropical equivalent of ‘kakishibu’ dye in 2018.
No mordants are used to fix the colours, which is done by sunlight! Edric has been
making these art pieces in Indian Tussar hand-spun and hand-woven silk and Thai
organic cotton.
In painting his textiles with wild fig dyes, Edric said he wanted to make a statement
about ‘Climate Change’ using his brush strokes depicting strong winds like typhoons
and hurricanes.
All his unique hand-crafted accessories and hats are also a signature style of Edric
Ong. He collaborates with Malaysian master artists Michael Lim, Juliana Embrose
and Abot Gudang who made them from organic material such as pandanus, rattan,
bamboo and upcycled metal!
The EO brand by Edric Ong is in the forefront of Eco-Fashion and Slow Fashion,
consciously working with communities of weavers and crafts artists to create and
market "hand-made"; designs. Based out of Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, the
unique fashion of Edric Ong combines a touch of the ethnic and oriental with the
contemporary; innovative styles with creative use of hand-woven silks and cottons.
He is a multi-awarded Malaysian designer of natural dye textiles, fashion and crafts
having won the UNESCO-ASEAN Crafts Seals of Excellence Japanese “G” mark
awards by the Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization (JIDPO).
Edric Ong was named the “Malaysian Designer of The Year 2009” at the Mercedes-
Benz/Stylo Fashion Awards in Kuala Lumpur, “Global Influencer” in 2016 at the
Asian Fashion Festival, and Best Designer at Atlas Bayrami Festival in Uzbekistan
